i BELIEVE MY GRANDMOTHER, MARIE DOUGHERTY, 1418 WEST 67TH ST, CHICAGO WAS AMONG THE FIRST CROSSING GUARDS IN HER NEIGHBORHOOD IN CHICAGO. i BELIEVE SHE WALKED ABOUT A MILE TO HER CROSSING GUARD LOCATION AND CROSSED SCHOOL CHILDREN MORNING, LUNCH TIME AND AFTER SCHOOL. IN THE SUMMER MONTHS SHE GUARDED THE WADING POOL AT MARQUETTE PARK.
SHE WORE A FULL POLICE UNIFORM, A WHISTLE, NOT SURE IF SHE HAD A BILLY CLUB, DON’T THINK SO OR I WOULD REMEMBER. IN SUMMERS I WOULD VISIT AND GO TO THE PARK WITH HER WHILE SHE WAS ON DUTY. AND ON MY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DAYS OFF SCHOOL, I WOULD ACCOMPANY HER TO CROSS CHILDREN TO AND FROM SCHOOL. THE KIDS LOVED HER, THEY ALL WANTED TO HOLD HER HAND TO CROSS THE STREET AND GREETED HER WITH A JUBILANT, HI MRS. DOUGHERTY, SHE LOVED ALL THE CHILDREN AND IT WAS VERY OBVIOUS AND TRANSPARENT TO THEM.
I WONDERED IF YOU MIGHT HAVE ANY PHOTOS OF CROSSING GUARDS IN 1951 OR 52 OF MY GRANDMOTHER IN FULL UNIFORM.. PLEASE ADVISE. WE HAVE NO PHOTOS.
