Incident & Biographic Details

Patrolman Charles John Scheiner, Jr., Star #6744, aged 28 years, was a 7 month, 12 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Traffic Division (TD).

On July 30, 1933, at 12:00 a.m., Officer Scheiner finished working his shift and met some friends, two couples, afterwards. While still in his police uniform they visited several places and had drinks. The last stop of the night was the Chelsea Cafe located at 914 West Wilson Avenue. At 3:30 a.m. one of the couples he was with became engaged in a quarrel and the man slapped his wife. Officer Scheiner took exception to this and stepped in. It was at this time that they all began to fight. However after a few minutes the fight started again and resolved into a free for all during which Officer Schiener was stuck with a chair over the head. While he lay on the dance floor some unknown man seized his revolver and fired several shots, one of which struck Officer Schiener in the chest. The unknown man then made good his escape. Officer Scheiner was transported to Lake View Hospital where he was pronounced dead five days later on August 4, 1933.

On August 15th, 1933 a Coroner’s jury returned a verdict of murder by unknown person.

Officer Scheiner was waked at his residence located at 4730 North Kewanee Avenue. His funeral mass was held at St. Edward’s Church located at 4350 West Sunnyside Avenue. He was laid to rest on August 7, 1933 in Ridgewood Cemetery, 9900 North Milwaukee Avenue, Des Plaines, Illinois.

Patrolman Charles John Scheiner, Jr., born March 8, 1905, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on December 23, 1932.

Officer Scheiner was survived by his wife, Mary Clara (nee McTigue Wunsch), age 24; daughter, Josephine Ellen, age 1; mother, Josephine (nee Bednorz) and brothers: Melvin and Richard.
