Patrolman Edwin J. Halloran, Star #3481, aged 37 years, 11 year, 11 month, 9 day was a veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the District 30 – Sheffield.
On December 26, 1926, Officer Halloran was cranking a police flivver, a small police vehicle, when the crank handle kicked back and bruised his left arm. Officer Halloran paid no attention to the injury and believed it to be a simple bruise. It wasn’t until January when blood poisoning began to develop. In January, 1927, he was taken to St. Mary Hospital where his left arm had to be amputated. Officer Halloran then developed a condition at the time called “septicemia of a pangremous condition of the forearm“ which was directly linked to the crank handle incident. On January 14, 1927, Officer Halloran died from the septicemia due to the chain of events of the crank handle incident.
Officer Halloran was waked at his residence located at 1146 West Newport Avenue. His funeral mass was held at St. Sebastian Catholic Church located at 820 West Wellington Avenue. He was laid to rest on January 17, 1927 in Calvary Cemetery, 301 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, Illinois. His grave is located in Lot S12, Block 17, Section Y.
Patrolman Edwin J. Halloran, born May 28, 1889, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on Feb 5, 1915 and was issued Star #2919. On September 1, 1926, he was issued Patrolman Star #3481. He earned 1 Credible Mention during his career.
Officer Halloran was a member of the Chicago Policemen’s Benevolent & Welfare Association. He was survived by his wife, Irene (nee Duffy), age 36; children: Irene Edwina, age 9 months, Florence, and Mary; mother, Mary (nee Fergus) and siblings: Annie Therese, George Francis, Laurissa and Loretta. He was preceded in death by his father, John and siblings: Alphonsus Hector and John Patrick, Sr.
