Patrolman Arthur William Hill, Sr., Star #4595, aged 55 years, was a 21 year, 10 month, 10 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the 2nd District – Wentworth.
On August 11, 1979, at 3:58 a.m., Officer Hill was working 10-99 on beat 205. He responded to a simulcast of a foot pursuit of a robbery offender. Shortly before the simulcast, beat 205A called for an assist at 57th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. The officer simulcast then reported that a robbery offender was fleeing on foot Westbound from that location. A foot chase and shortly after the simulcast, Officer Hill came on the air and reported that he was on the trail, in the park, and the offender had not come out of the park yet. About one minute later Officer Hill came on the air again stating that the offender still had not come out of the park and that he must be between 56th and 57th Streets by the tennis courts. At 4:15 a.m. beat 205A came up on the air and coded the call out with a 19P. Officer Hill then went into the 2nd District station and complained of chest pains. Officer Hill was transported to Michael Reese Hospital by beat 250 where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Kern & Kurts at 5:40 a.m. on August 11, 1979. His cause of death was determined to be from acute coronary insufficiency and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Officer Hill was waked at Unity Funeral Parlors located at 4114 South Michigan Avenue. His funeral mass was held at Metropolitan Community Church located at 4610 South Prairie Avenue. He was laid to rest on August 16, 1979 in Lincoln Cemetery, 12300 South Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.
Patrolman Arthur William Hill, Sr., born December 14, 1923, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on October 1, 1957 and was issued Star #4511. On June 30, 1966, he was issued Patrolman Star #4595 after reporting his previous star lost.
Officer Hill served in the Armed Forces, was a veteran of World War II and was Honorably Discharged. He was survived by his wife, Elsie (nee Billips); children: Arthur William, Jr., Donna, Frederick, John, Karen and Malanie; parents: John Edward Hill, Sr. and Madeline Louise (nee Wilson) and siblings: John Edward, Jr. and Rosemary.
