Incident & Biographic Details


Patrolman Bruce Roman Niedoborski, Star #17196, aged 41 years, was a 7 year, 0 month, 30 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, and assigned to the 2nd District – Wentworth.

On August 18, 1989, at 5:20 p.m., Officer Niedorborski was working the third watch 10-99 on beat 238. While on routine patrol he became ill while driving his patrol car Southbound on Halsted Street and veered into oncoming traffic. At 4615 South Halsted Street Officer Niedorborski’s squad car crashed head on into a 1988 Chevy truck driven by Michael J. Butler, age 22, of 169 South Benton Street, Palatine, Illinois. After striking the Chevy his squad car spun around and he was struck a second time by a 1984 Mack Semi-Tractor Truck driven by Domenico Easo, age 30, of 9642 West River Street, Schiller Park, Illinois. According to witness, George Schrobe, age 32, of 4551 South Halsted Street, Officer Niedoborski was unconscious and slumped over his steering wheel in the moments leading up to the collision. Officer Niedorborski was transported to Michael Reese Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Stricker at 5:56 p.m. on August 18, 1989. His cause of death was determined to be from the injuries sustained in the crash. It was not determined what caused the officer to slump over his steering wheel prior to the crash.

Officer Niedorborski was waked at Egan Funeral Home located at 3700 West 63rd Street. His funeral mass was held at St. Turibius Church located at 5646 South Karlov Avenue. He was cremated and entombed on August 23, 1989 in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 7201 Archer Avenue, Justice, Illinois. His crypt is located in Mausoleum, Crypt 01092-6.

Patrolman Bruce Roman Niedoborski, born August 25, 1947, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on July 19, 1982.

Officer Niedorborski served in the Armed Forces, was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was Honorably Discharged. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the St. Jude Police League. Officer Niedorborski was survived by his ex-wife, Milfred C. Lauren (nee Williams); child, Kelly M., age 19, and parents: Lorraine R. (nee Stachowski) and Roman John.
