Incident & Biographic Details

Patrolman Jacob John Sebastian, Star # Unknown, aged 55 years, was a 14 year, 3 month, 5 day veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to District 14, 37th Precinct – Cragin.

On November 8, 1905, Officer Sebastian was on duty working with his partner Patrolman Robert Adlum. The two officers were assigned to deliver election reports to the Cook County Board of Election headquarters located in City Hall at No. 119 West Randolph Street (present day 142 West Randolph Street). As the officers entered the building, Officer Adlum tripped and his service revolver flew from his coat pocket as he attempted to break his fall. The gun discharged and the bullet struck Officer Sebastian in the abdomen. Officer Sebastian was transported to Chicago Emergency Hospital where he would undergo surgery. Before allowing the doctors to operate, Officer Sebastian insisted that his wife be notified of his condition. The surgery was successful, the doctors removing the bullet, and his prognosis was favorable. However complications arose and he died the next day on November 9, 1905.

Officer Sebastian was waked at his residence located at No. 2328 East Ravenswood Park (present day 6159 North Ravenswood Avenue). He was laid to rest in Montrose Cemetery, 5400 North Pulaski Road, Chicago, Illinois.

Patrolman Jacob John Sebastian, born in February 1850, received his Probationary Appointment to the Chicago Police Department on August 4, 1891.

Officer Sebastian was survived by his wife, Elizabeth (nee Raquet).
